Label Materials: Paper, Film and Adhesive
A label is a printed surface plus an adhesive and a destination. Treating only one part as the specification creates surprises.

Start with the destination
Describe the surface, temperature, moisture, handling and expected life. Paper, film and adhesive families respond differently to that environment, and a print finish can change the relationship again.

Keep the code area honest
Reserve space for the barcode, quiet zones and the data that must remain readable. GS1 guidance treats visual appearance, data content and technical verification as distinct checks.

Begin with the destination
A label is a printed surface joined to an adhesive and a destination. Describe that destination first: glass, corrugated board, plastic, painted metal or a textured package; indoor shelf or cold chain; dry handling or moisture; short promotion or long service life. Temperature, abrasion, cleaning and application speed can matter as much as colour.
Only then compare paper, film and adhesive families. Paper can bring tactility and a familiar writing surface, while films may resist moisture or conform to a curve. The correct choice still depends on the adhesive, liner, finish and converter's approved application method.

Compare label constructions
Paper labels can suit cartons, jars and short-life applications where touch and print feel carry value. Film labels may offer dimensional stability or moisture resistance, but transparency, static, ink adhesion and waste handling become part of the decision. A permanent adhesive and a removable adhesive are not interchangeable simply because the face stock looks the same.
Compare the complete construction, not the face material in isolation. Ask for a sample applied to the real surface, then expose it to the expected handling and temperature. A label that looks perfect on a flat sample can lift at a corner, tunnel on a curve or become unreadable after a finish is added.

Test print and application together
Prepare an application test with the final dimensions, code area, finish, liner and representative data. Apply it at the same pressure and direction used in production, then check edge lift, wrinkles, bubbles, adhesion, scuffing and removal. Keep a second sample after the expected dwell time because a short bench check does not show every failure.
For a shipping label, print a difficult barcode and the longest text, then place it where the carton will be handled. For a cosmetic label, test the curve, oil or moisture exposure and the way gloss affects small type. The example makes the material decision answer the real job rather than a catalogue photograph.

Protect codes and finishing zones
Reserve the barcode's quiet space, human-readable text and any required data before decoration. A varnish, foil, transparent film or textured stock can change contrast and scanner behaviour. Keep the code away from a seam, curve, die-cut edge or heavily handled corner. Verify the produced symbol, not just the vector artwork.
Common mistakes include selecting an adhesive from a generic label description, assuming the same liner works on every applicator, and changing the face stock after colour approval without retesting the ink and finish. Record the material construction in the job file so a repeat run does not rely on a remembered product name.

State the application limits
GS1 guidance helps separate data content, symbol appearance and technical verification, but it does not choose an adhesive for a particular surface or certify a local application. Current converter data, destination tests and the responsible packaging or logistics specialist remain necessary. This guide is a procurement and briefing framework, not a performance guarantee.
