Woven Step by Step: Cobra, Fishtail and the Working Knot
A woven cord project is a specification: a cord type, a weave, a measured ratio and a finishing step. Read those four values and a step-by-step project, from a cobra bracelet to a dog collar, becomes a repeatable build.

Read the cord before the project
Paracord is a manufactured specification before it is a hobby material. Standard 550 cord is kernmantle construction: a braided outer sheath over a core of twisted inner strands, rated around 550 pounds of static load. The sheath-and-core structure is why the cord weaves flat, why it can be gutted for fine lashing and why two cords that look alike can carry different ratings.

The bracelet weaves
The cobra weave is the entry build: two working ends alternated over a core, producing a dense flat band that holds roughly eight to ten feet of cord on the wrist. Its step order is identical on every pass, which is why it teaches tension; any irregularity in the finished band is a record of an irregular hand.
The fishtail reverses the logic: the working ends cross behind the core and pull to the opposite side, giving a flatter, tighter band that consumes cord more slowly and takes longer to weave. Each weave is a trade among three variables: cord consumed per unit of length, build time and how quickly the object releases. A buyer choosing between them is choosing which variable is scarce, the same decision structure a production brief applies to a folded piece.

Hardware and the working knots
Keychains teach the knots rather than the weaves. The square-knot keychain is alternating half-hitches over a core, the same motion as the cobra without the buckle; the monkey’s fist is a ball of cord wrapped around a core in three passes, a knot that has to be tightened in order or not at all.
A lanyard with a carabiner adds hardware to the specification: the weave must clear the clip’s gate, the loop must sit where the hand expects it and the finishing must survive a daily pull. A wide dog collar is the same specification raised in stakes: flat weave for comfort, a welded ring for the lead and materials that survive washing, which is why construction details matter more than the pattern.
In every case the finishing step is where the build is decided: ends are melted, tucked or whipped, and the difference between a finished object and a fraying one is usually thirty seconds at the end of the instructions.

Choosing cord like a buyer
The buying question is the same as for any spec material: construction, rating, batch. Real 550 cord states its sheath and core construction; craft cord sold by colour alone may be a single-braid sleeve with no core at all. The label that omits the construction is a brief that omits the substrate.
Length planning is a measured step, not a guess: a cobra bracelet consumes roughly a foot of cord per inch of wrist plus the buckle allowance, a monkey’s fist takes its own multiple of the ball’s circumference, and cutting short is the failure that no finishing can repair.
Care is part of the spec for anything worn or handled daily: synthetic kernmantle cord tolerates water and mild detergent, which is why a wide collar or a lanyard can be washable by construction rather than by claim. Inspect melt points and hardware after washing, because the weakest point of the object is the finish, not the weave.

From a pattern to a repeatable build
A jig is what turns a pattern into a repeat. Even a board with two pins fixes the working length and the tension reference, so the fifth bracelet matches the first; without it every build re-measures the world by hand and the size wanders.
Batch thinking helps even at one bench: cut all cord first, seal the ends in one pass, weave in a fixed order and finish in a final pass. The sequence is the same reasoning a small bindery uses, and it produces the same result: consistent objects and a count of what the batch consumed.
Recording the build closes the loop. A card that names the cord, the lengths, the step order and the time taken is the object’s job ticket; it is what lets the project be quoted, repeated or handed to another pair of hands.
The discipline scales both ways. A first cobra bracelet and a run of fifty dog collars differ only in count: the same cord, the same weave order, the same finishing rule, with the card beside the bench doing the remembering for everyone.

Why step-by-step is a work instruction
A good knot guide is a miniature production drawing: named materials, a measured cut, numbered passes and a finishing specification. The reader reproduces the object because the instruction removed the decisions, which is precisely what a production file does for a printer.

Limits
Craft cord is not life-safety equipment unless the specification says so, and a handmade bracelet carries no certification. When a load matters, buy rated cordage and hardware from a documented supplier and treat every woven object as equipment to inspect before trusting.
