Paper Weights: What GSM Changes
A number on a paper sample says something about mass, but not everything about how the sheet will fold, feel or run.

Grammage is a comparison, not a personality
GSM describes mass per square metre. It helps a buyer compare papers, but bulk, stiffness, opacity, coating and fibre direction also affect the finished piece. Two sheets with the same grammage can make different folds and carry different visual weight.
Treat the number as the start of a conversation with the printer or paper merchant. Name the application, the folding pattern and the handling expectation.

Make the sample earn its place
A paper sample is most useful when it is marked with the process, finish and intended fold. It lets the team see ink holdout and read-through before a production choice becomes expensive to change.

Separate grammage from thickness
Grammage, expressed as grams per square metre, describes mass over an area. It does not directly tell you the caliper, bulk or stiffness that a reader feels. A dense coated sheet and a more open uncoated sheet can share a grammage while behaving differently in a fold, a pocket, a mailer or a guillotine stack.
Ask the paper supplier for the properties that matter to the object: caliper, bulk, opacity, surface, fibre direction and recommended printing process. If the job is a cover, a tag or a carton panel, name that use instead of treating GSM as a universal quality score.

Compare samples in context
Place candidate stocks beside the intended artwork and fold them along the real crease. Look at show-through, ink density, edge cracking, curl after printing and the amount of force needed to open the fold. A loose swatch proves less than a marked dummy that carries the same coverage, dimensions and finish.
A 170 gsm sheet may be comfortable for an inserted leaflet, while a 300 gsm cover may need scoring before folding. Neither number is a rule. Coating, grain direction, humidity and the finishing equipment can change the outcome more than a small step in grammage.

Write a stock test
For a buyer test, specify the sheet size, press route, ink coverage, folding pattern and delivery condition. Print a small controlled sample on the preferred stock and one alternative. Measure whether the sheets feed, stack, fold and trim as expected, then have the person who will handle the finished piece approve its weight and tactility.
For a mail pack, add the envelope and insert sequence to the test. For a display card, add the hanging or fixing method. A stack that is comfortable on a desk may be too heavy for postage or too flexible for a freestanding display, so the application must govern the result.

Watch for misleading shortcuts
The most common error is comparing GSM across unrelated paper families as if the number were thickness. Another is approving a sample before the proposed coating or foil is applied. A finish can change stiffness, friction and the apparent depth of colour. A third error is ignoring fibre direction, which can make an otherwise suitable sheet crack or resist a fold.
Do not approve from a photograph. Lighting, camera processing and a monitor conceal opacity and touch. Keep the physical swatch labelled with the merchant reference, finish, date and intended use so the production team can tell whether a later sample is genuinely comparable.

State the limits
Paper properties vary by mill, batch, moisture and coating. The same nominal grammage cannot guarantee identical runnability or fold quality, and a printer may recommend a different stock after checking the actual finishing line. This guide helps the brief become precise; it is not a substitute for a current technical data sheet or a folded proof.
