Finish is part of the object

A coating can change the way a colour reads and the way a sheet moves through a finishing line. Lamination may protect a surface, while varnish or a tactile treatment may shape attention without adding a separate film.

The right question is not “what looks expensive?” It is “what will this surface encounter, and what must remain legible after that encounter?”

Name the handoff

Add the finish to the artwork and production brief, not just the moodboard. Identify whether it is full coverage or selective, whether it crosses a fold, and whether the barcode, handwriting or adhesive needs a clear zone.

Describe the surface job

Start by naming what the surface must survive: fingerprints, moisture, abrasion, repeated handling, a fold, adhesive contact or a short display life. Lamination adds a film, varnish places a coating on selected or full areas, foil introduces a separate reflective or metallic effect, and tactile treatments change the way a reader discovers the piece.

The finish should be specified with the substrate and process, because ink adhesion, drying, curl and trimming are connected. A surface treatment is part of the object, not a decorative switch added after the printer has made all the other decisions.

Compare protection and attention

Lamination is a broad protective layer that can alter stiffness, reflection and recyclability. A varnish may preserve a paper feel while controlling gloss or directing attention to a panel. Foil creates contrast through a transfer or stamping operation and may need a separate die, pressure and registration allowance. Tactile coatings can reward touch but may increase cost and inspection complexity.

Choose by the job's encounter. A frequently handled menu has a different surface problem from a premium invitation, a barcode label or a point-of-sale panel. A finish that looks impressive under a showroom light can reduce legibility, create glare or interfere with handwriting in use.

Build the approval dummy

Mark the finish layer clearly in the artwork and produce a physical dummy with the intended fold, trim and adhesive or code areas. Inspect the edge, the crease, the transition between coated and uncoated zones, and the way a small type or barcode reads under ordinary light. Ask the finishing operator to approve the path, not only the designer.

For example, a selective varnish on a carton front can be effective if the quiet zone around a barcode stays clear and the die-cut edge has enough tolerance. On a folded brochure, a full film may need scoring and a different fold allowance. The example shows why a moodboard cannot replace a production test.

Avoid finish-related failures

Do not place foil, varnish or a lamination callout only in a message to the printer. Hidden instructions get separated from the final PDF, especially when several versions are exported. Do not assume a coated barcode surface will scan like an uncoated one, and do not forget that a hand-written field needs a compatible surface.

Another failure is applying a protective treatment after a colour approval without reviewing the changed reflection. Recheck under the light and at the reading distance that matter. If a coating crosses a fold, a crease test can reveal cracking or whitening before the full run.

Keep the specification honest

A finish cannot repair a poor substrate, an under-resolved image or an impossible installation. Suppliers may use different names for tactile or protective effects, and availability depends on the finishing line, sheet size, run and environmental requirements. Ask for a current sample and technical recommendation whenever the surface is safety, code or durability sensitive.
